Chaitra Month

Chaitra month is considered to be the 1st Lunar month in the Hindu calendar. As per the Gregorian calendar, this month falls between March-April. 

The lunar month is marked by two methods in the Hindu calendar. In the 1st method, the Lunar month marks its presence from Purnima to Purnima which is known as the Purnimanta calendar whereas in another method Lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya which is known as the Amanta calendar. 

Some important festivals of Chaitra month are Sheetala Ashtami, Papmochani Ekadashi, Gudi Padwa, Gangaur, Yamuna Chhath, Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti. 

List of Chaitra Month Festivals-

  • Sheetala Ashtami - This day is dedicated to the goddess Sheetala mata and is also known as Basoda Puja. 

  • Papmochani Ekadashi - This Ekadashi vrat is one of the 24 Ekadashi vrat which is kept to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

  • Ranga Panchami - Ranga Panchami is generally observed after 5 days of the Holi festival. In some parts of India, the festival of colors is celebrated on this day. 

  • Ghatasthapana - It is one of the important rituals during Chaitra Navratri as it marks the initiation of 9 days of festivity. 
  • Ugadi - The beginning of the New Year is marked with the festival of Ugadi which is also spelled as Yugadi. 
  • Gudi Padwa - Gudi Padwa also known as Samvatsar Padvo is celebrated by the Konkanis and Maharashtrians as the 1st day of the year. 
  • Gangaur- Goddess Gauri who is the consort of Lord Shiva is worshipped during the festival of Gangaur. Married as well as unmarried women worship Goddess Gauri during Gangaur. 
  • Yamuna Chhath - Yamuna Chhath is the celebration of the birth anniversary of Yamuna Devi.
  • Rama Navami - Lord Rama’s birth is celebrated on the day of Ram Navmi. Lord Rama was born to the King and Queen of Ayodhya on this day. 
  • Hanuman Jayanti- Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to celebrate the existence and birth of Hanumana. 
  • Chaitra Purnima - Chaitra Purnima comes after the Gudi Padwa and Yugadi and is known as the 1st Purnima as per the Hindu lunar calendar.
