Gujarati Calendar is based on Vikram Samvat Calendar/ Panchang. It begins a day after Diwali. Gujarati Calendar is based on the lunisolar calendar. Gujarati Vikram Samvat Calendar is 56 years ahead of the Gregorian Calendar. Currently, Vikram Samvat Calendar 2077 is followed.
It uses a solar year divided into 2 lunar months- Kartak (કારતક), Magshar (માગશર), Posh (પોષ), Maha (મહા), Fagan (ફાગણ), Chaitra (ચૈતર), Vaishakh (વૈશાખ), Jeth (જેઠ), Ashadh (અષાડ), Shravan (શ્રાવણ), Bhadarvo (ભાદરવો) and Aaso (આસો). Each month in a year consists of 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes and 3 seconds. To balance the lunar months into a solar year, at the interval of 30 months, an extra month called Adhik Mahino or Purushottam maas is added in the Calendar.
In Gujarati calendar, the days are pronounced like, Monday as Somvar, Tuesday as Mangalvaar, Wednesday as Budhvaar, Thursday as Guruvaar, Friday as Shukravaar, Saturday as Shanivaar and Sunday as Ravivaar.
In Gujarati Vikram Panchang, months are as per the moon, seasons are as per the sun and the days are as per both the sun and the moon. Lunar Tithis have different lengths. As in Gujarati Calendar, the days are calculated using the difference of the longitudinal angle between the position of the sun and the moon, sometimes a Tithi is omitted or shared for two continuous days.
Gujarati Vikram Samvat Panchang is different from the northern Vikram Samvat Calendar. Unlike the other Indian subcontinent Calendars, Gujarati Calendar starts from Kartik month instead of Chaitra month.
New Year: Gujarati New year or Bestu Varas or Nutan Varsh (બેસતું વર્ષ) is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Paksha Pratipada or Kartik Ekam. As per Hindu Panchang, Gujarati New Year commences on Govardhan Puja, the day after Diwali.
