What is Purnima?

What to eat in Purnima Vrat

The duration of Purnima Vrat is of 12 hours and it begins when the Sun rises on Purnima day and ends when the full moon rises in the evening. The requirement to keep a fast on Purnima day is that you should refrain from consuming grains, rice, salt or any kind of cereals. Though, in ideal conditions, you should even skip water to keep a proper fast. You can drink milk and eat fruits during this fast; it would be detoxifying for your body.

There is a scientific reason behind the recommendation of the astrologers to not eat regular food on Purnima day. It is said that acid content in the stomach is minimum on the new moon or a full moon day so, the person is not able to digest regular food. Hence, it is advised to eat light food in order to detox and cleanse the system.

Purnima Vrat Udyapan Vidhi

To begin Purnima Vrat, it is advisable to get up before sunrise and take a dip in a sacred river. Post which, you should offer prayers to Lord Vishnu or Shiva. There is no prescribed Puja per se, but, it is recommended that Satyanarayan Puja should be performed on Purnima day.

Satyanarayana Puja should be performed on a Purnima day as it is considered to be highly auspicious among the Hindu community. The Hindus perform this Puja on the important occasions like starting a new venture, marriage, housewarming etc. It's basically a way to thank Lord Vishnu for his blessings.

The main process of Satyanarayan Puja starts with praying to Lord Ganesha and chanting the Vishnu Sahasranamam Shloka. You can also chant some more Shlokas and then offer Milk porridge sprinkled with some saffron, some dry fruits, exotic fruits along with betel leaves etc. You should recite the Satyanarayan Vrat Katha before concluding the Puja.
