Navratri, the worship of Maa Durga for 9 days falls twice in a year - Chaitra and Shardiya Navratri that holds a prominent place in Hinduism.
However, According to Bhagavad Purana, Navratri is celebrated 4 times in a year. Apart from Shardiya and Chaitra navratri, the other two (Ashwin and Vasantha) are Gupt Navratri. The one that falls on the Shukla Paksha of the Magha month is Magha Gupt Navratri and the other in Ashadha month is Ashadha Navratri.

Magha Gupt Navratri Ideology
Magha Gupt is also referred to as Gayatri ‘Shishir Navratri’ as it falls between the winter months of January and February.
It is known as ‘Gupt’ which means secret because it is worshiped in secret and even this Navratri is not very well known to most people. This Navratri is meant for sadhaks and those performing powerful and special tantrik rituals for Shatkarma.
Sadhaks are those who meditate and Tantriks who perform rituals. They worship Goddess Shakti for nine days. Rules related to fasting and worship are strictly followed by devotees.
Sishir Navratri is predominantly celebrated in the northern parts of India especially in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Magha Gupt Navratri Importance
- Shishir Navratri is celebrated with the primary objective to propitiate the Goddess of Shakti to bestow upon prosperity, wealth, knowledge (sacred and secular) and all positive energies.
- Goddess Durga alleviates distress and followers earnestly worship her for showing kindness. This ritualistic worship of Shakti Maa is performed daily with the recitation of the Durga Saptashati.
- Sincere spiritual devotees keep fast for 9 days or at least once in each of the 3-3 days periods by taking sattvic food, especially fruits, and milk only to receive the divine blessing of the Goddess.
Magha Gupt Navratri Rituals
- During Magh Gupt Navratri, worshippers get up at dawn and take an early bath. After concluding morning rituals, they start cleaning and decorating the place of worship or puja and begin their preparations.
- An idol of Maa Durga is placed (Ghatasthapana) on a red cloth and offered her with colorful flowers, rice, dhoop, chunri, bindi, bangles, and incense stick. This ritual lasts for 9 days from Pratipda to Navami that are as defined below:

- Followers follow strict fast where they can only eat one meal after finishing puja rituals and offering food to Brahmin. Few people can observe partial fasting by eating fruits and other dairy products.
- Devotees recite ‘Durga Mantra’ 108 times during this Navratri.
Magha Gupt Navratri Puja Vidhi
Kalash grown with barley is kept in front of the Goddess Aadhya Shakti’s idol at auspicious muhurat. Another Kalash with a raw coconut kept over it is placed and its sthapana begins.
Aakhand jyot is ignited in front of Goddess Bhagwati and post that Ganesh puja is initiated. Then the puja of Varun Dev and Vishnu Dev is executed. After that, the puja of Shiva, the Sun, the Moon and all Nine Planets is performed and then after Goddess Bhagwati is worshipped.
During this Navratri, fast is observed along with the recitation of Devi Path and Durga Saptashati.
