In Southern India, Makar Sankranti is celebrated for four days. There are Sankranti Puja rituals and traditions which are followed in the Southern part of India. The day of Sankranti is considered to be auspicious and good for charity, but all the auspicious ceremonies are avoided on this day. Makar Sankranti marks the beginning of a prosperous phase or the holy phase of transition. It also marks the end of the inauspicious phase, which starts in mid of December. All the sacred rituals can be performed from this day onwards.
There are various names given to Makar Sankranti in different parts of India. In the state of Gujarat, it is known by the name of Uttarayan. In Tamil Nadu, it is known as Pongal whereas in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, it is named as Maghi. On this day, various sweets and snacks are prepared at home. Makar Sankranti is celebrated in such a manner that all the bitter and sad moments which occurred in the past are forgotten on this day. This day marks the new phase of life which is full of knowledge, purity, and wisdom.
