Importance of Amavasya / Significance of Amavasya
The new moon day or the no moon day in the Hindu Calendar is known as Amavasya Aka Amavasi. It occurs on the first night in the first quarter of the lunar month. The moon is not visible in the night, so it is also known as the no moon day. It holds great significance in the Hindu faith and many of the devotees make offerings to their dead ancestors. So, it might be a debate that Amavasya should be regarded as auspicious or inauspicious.
The fortnight that begins with Amavasya is referred as Shukla Paksha. There are Amavasya’s which are believed to be auspicious namely Mauni Amavasya which occurs in the Hindu Magh month (January – February) and Mahalya Amavasya which occurs in the month of Ashwayuja (September – October) are considered to be highly auspicious. In the state of Tamil Nadu, the Amavasi in the Aadi month is of great importance and also thought to be very auspicious.

Mostly people observe a Holy dip in the Holy waters. The procedure of fasting is also observed by the devotees on this day.
