Amavasya is a significant day in Hindu Calendar. On this day, the moon is not visible in the sky which is why it is also termed as No Moon Day or New Moon Day. Amavasi, as it is also known, occurs every Hindu lunar month, so there are 12 no moon days in a year. It is a day that marks the beginning of Shukla Paksha or the bright fortnight in the Lunar month.

- Mauni Amavasya - This Amavasya falls in the Hindu month of Magh i.e. between January and February and is considered as a spiritually significant day.
- Mahalaya Amavasya - Mahalaya Amavasya is observed on the last day of Mah
- alaya Paksha and is again a spiritually significant day. It is regarded as an auspicious day to do charity and begin or continue your humanitarian work. It usually falls in the month of September-October. It is also known as Pitru Paksha and is the most appropriate day to make offerings to our departed ancestors.
In Hindu tradition, deep significance is given to Somvati Amavasya. It is an Amavasya that falls on a Monday. It is a belief that if one observes a fast on this Amavasya, then all their wishes and desires are fulfilled. Women should especially do Somvati Amavasya Vrat for their husband’s long life.
