Amavasya, the darkest night of the month, has immense spiritual significance in Hindu religion. As per the Hindu scripture ‘Garuda Purana’, Lord Vishnu had proclaimed, that one’s ancestors come down to earth on the day of Amavasya. There are certain Amavasya Dates which are regarded as highly auspicious and religiously important.

  • Mauni Amavasya - This Amavasya falls in the Hindu month of Magh i.e. between January and February and is considered as a spiritually significant day.
  • Mahalaya Amavasya - Mahalaya Amavasya is observed on the last day of Mah
  • alaya Paksha and is again a spiritually significant day. It is regarded as an auspicious day to do charity and begin or continue your humanitarian work. It usually falls in the month of September-October. It is also known as Pitru Paksha and is the most appropriate day to make offerings to our departed ancestors.

In Hindu tradition, deep significance is given to Somvati Amavasya. It is an Amavasya that falls on a Monday. It is a belief that if one observes a fast on this Amavasya, then all their wishes and desires are fulfilled. Women should especially do Somvati Amavasya Vrat for their husband’s long life.
