Lord Vishweshwara

Lord Vishweshwara temple in Karnataka, famous as Yelluru Shri Vishweshwara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is also known as Mahathobhara Yelluru Shri Vishweshwara Temple. Lord Shiva is also known as Vishwanath, which is why the 12th Jyotirling is named after Lord Vishweshwara in Kashi, famous as Kashi Vishwanath temple.

Vishweshwara Vrat Katha

Vishweshwara Vrat, falls on the day of Pradosh Vrat, which is observed on the third day of the five days long Bhishma Panchak, before the Kartika Purnima.

The legend has it that in ancient times, a Shudra king of the Kuthyar Dynasty, named as Kunda Raja, once invited the Bhargava Muni to his Kingdom. Bhargava Muni, however, denied the request, saying that the kingdom lacked the presence of temples and holy rivers.

Kunda Raja was so disappointed that he left the kingdom under the control of his deputy and went to the bank of river Ganga, for performing a great Yajna to invoke Lord Shiva. Pleased by the Kunda Raja’s devotion, Lord Shiva agreed to his wish of staying in his kingdom.

When Lord Shiva was residing in Kunda Raja’s kingdom, a tribal woman was looking for her lost son in the forest, she used her sword to cut a plump tuber, and the tuber started to bleed. She started crying loudly, calling out her son’s name “Yellu”, assuming that she mistook her Son for the tuber.

In that moment, Lord Shiva appeared in that spot in the form of Linga, and that is how the temple built at this place got its name as Yelluru Vishweshwara temple. The blow mark on the Linga can still be seen. It is believed that the tuber stopped bleeding only after the Kunda Raja poured coconut water on it. This is an important ritual at this temple, to offer coconut water or coconut oil to the Shiva Deity. The oil offered to the Deity is used to keep the lamps in the temple burning inexhaustibly.

The five day long festivities during Bhishma Panchak also consist of Tulsi Vivah, which is an important festival in Hindu religion. Vaikunth Chaturdashi is celebrated on the next day of Vishweshvara Vrat, and on this day, devotees of Lord Shiva, perform the sacred Manikarnika Snan on the ghats of holy river Ganga.
