What is Purnima?

In India, there is a vast significance of the Full Moon Days which is called Purnima in major regions of the country. The day of Purnima holds much importance as most of the time there are some major festivals which take place on this day or these are Jayanti days. When the full moon day or the Purnima takes place during Vasant (Basant) i.e. the spring season then that Purnima is called as Vasant Purnima. As per the Gregorian calendar, it falls in the month of March or February. As per the Hindu calendar, the day falls in the Phalguna month.

What Is The Significance Of Vasant Purnima?

The day holds multifaceted significance and is considered as one of the most revered occasions as per Hindu beliefs. The day is also popular as Phalguna Purnima which marks the arrival of Holi. On this particular day, there is the start of Basanta Utsav (the spring festival) and Holi (Festival of colors). The day is extremely pious for performing varied sacred acts and for performing puja and observing fast. Crops are harvested during this time and a lot of abundances can be observed.

What is the Vasant Purnima Katha?

While observing the fast of Vasant Purnima, it is highly essential to read or listen to the Vasant Purnima Katha. As per the Hindu mythology, Vasant Purnima is the auspicious time when Goddess Lakshmi was incarnated. During the Samudra Manthan, there were a number of things which came out in the process of the churning of the ocean which was distributed equally among the demons and the gods. On the day of Vasant Purnima, Goddess Lakshmi came out from the ocean and chose Lord Vishnu as her master. Thus, along with the Satyanarayan Katha, Lakshmi Puja Katha (Vasant Purnima Katha) is also recited on the eve of this auspicious day to attain the divine blessings of the deities.

What Are The Rituals Of Vasant Purnima?

  • The people who observe a fast of Vasant Purnima need to wake up early morning and take a holy bath.
  • Clean the place and put the idol, statue or picture of the deities Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Decorate the place and adorn the deities with flowers, vermilion, turmeric powder, and sandal paste.
  • Collect all the puja materials such as sweets, fruits, nuts, betel leaves, and various other essentials.
  • Place few coins in front of the altar symbolizing Goddess Lakshmi.
  • After completing the morning puja ritual, the observers must keep a fast of Vasant Purnima till the time they see Moon God in the evening or night.
  • The observers need to do the puja ritual once again as soon as the fast is completed after the moon rise.
  • The devotees must perform the Satyanarayan Puja and recite Satyanarayan Katha to get the divine blessings of Lord Vishnu.
  • The people who have observed a fast must also chant Goddess Lakshmi mantras and slokas during the puja to please Goddess Lakshmi.

How Vasant Purnima Is Celebrated?

The celebrations of Vasant Purnima takes place like a cultural event where dance performances, singing competitions, dramas, and plays are organized. The celebrations start a day prior to the eve. Temples of Lord Vishnu are decorated with garlands, flowers, and lights and the idols of the deities are also adorned with new clothes, jewelry, and garlands. The festivities go for the entire day making it a colorful and cultural extravaganza.
