What is Shravana Putrada Ekadashi

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is celebrated and observed in dedication to Lord Vishnu. This festival and puja is especially done by a married couple who are unable to have a child, especially a son in which they observe a Putrada Ekadashi fast and perform pujas to worship Lord Vishnu and seek his blessings.

Putrada Ekadashi is celebrated two times in a year. People celebrate the day first in the month of December or January and second in the month of July or August. Ekadashi or the eleventh day (tithi) in Hindu calendar, which falls in the month of December or January is called as the Paush Shukla Putrada Ekadashi and the other Ekadashi celebrated in the month of July or August is known as Shravan Shukla Putrada Ekadashi.

  • Ritual of Parana: Parana means concluding or breaking the fast. The Shravana Putrada Ekadashi fast Parana is performed on the very next day of the Putrada Ekadashi after sunrise. It is essential to perform the ritual of Parana within the time period of Dwadashi Tithi as observing Parana after Dwadashi tithi is offer can have some adverse effects.

What is the Significance of Putrada Ekadashi

  1. The name Putrada has been derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Putr’ which means ‘son’ and ‘ada’ which means ‘giving’. In the Vedas, the Lord Vishnu is regarded as the one who can fulfill all your wishes and desires. So, those couples who pray to Lord Vishnu for a son on this day, it is believed that their wish is fulfilled.
  2. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi fast is observed and the holy day is celebrated by the married couple who do not have a son for a quite long time after their marriage.
  3. Vedas prescribe Shraddha (ancestor rites), a ritual to be performed only by sons and for the liberation of departed soul, the married couples pray for a male child on the eve of Shravana Putrada Ekadashi.
  4. In some parts of the world, people question the significance of this Shravana Putrada Ekadashi as it is regarded as the partial behaviour towards the female child. The festival has been celebrated since ancient times when much importance was given to the birth of a son to carry their generation forward and to take care of them when they get old.

What is Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat can be concluded only after listening or reciting Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha. The story of Putrada Ekadashi has been mentioned in the Bhavishya Purana which is narrated by Lord Krishna to the King Yudhishthira.

  • There was a King Mahijit who was a powerful and wealthy ruler. But, the king could not have any children even after asking the saints, brahmins and sages for suggesting the ways to have a child.
  • The King did not find any remedy to his problem and lastly met a learned sage named Lomesh.
  • With divine visions and strong meditation, the sage discovered that this is happening with the King because of the sins of his previous birth.
  • The sage reminded him that in the previous birth he was a merchant and while he was on a professional tour, he got thirsty and reached a pond to quench his thirst. There was also a calf and cow who were drinking water from the same pond. The King, when he was merchant, scared them and himself drank the whole water.
  • Due to this past sin, he was cursed to remain childless. But because of the other good deeds, he took birth as a king. The sage then recommended the king as well as the queen to worship Lord Vishnu and observe a Ekadashi fast on the eve of Shravana Ekadashi in order to get rid of the sin or the curse.
  • As advised, both the king and the queen observed a fast of Shravan Ekadashi, offered prayers to Lord Vishnu, chanted divine mantras and also donated money, clothes and jewelry to the Brahmins. Later to this, the wish of the couple was fulfilled and they were blessed with a brilliant son who became the heir to their kingdom.
