Saubhagya Sundari Teej falls on 03rd of December, 2020 this year.

This festival is celebrated to worship Goddess Parvati. Saubhagya Sundari Teej is a festival as important as the Karva Chauth in Indian society. However, unlike Karva Chauth, that can be done only by the married women, this festival can be celebrated by both married and unmarried women.

This Saubhagya Sundari Teej vrat or the day of penance is celebrated on the third day of Krishna Paksh or Mārgaśīrṣa month related to Mṛgaśira. This is when the Moon is in alignment with this particular Mṛgaśira Nakshatra.

According to the legend of Bhavishya Purana when Goddess Sati sacrificed her body, irated by her father’s words, she died promising that in every birth she would always come back as Shiva’s wife. Thus, when she took her next birth as Parvati, she penanced for the whole month of Shravan (mid July to mid of August) for obtaining Lord Shiva as her husband in that particular birth. Saubhagya Sundari Teej is the easiest way to please Goddess Parvati/ Sati/Durga. In India, there is an elaborate ritual around this day’s celebration.

The women are usually all decked up on this day. There is an elaborate vidhi (process) consisting of 16 Shringar adornments that they have to use during this day.
