Phalguna Purnima - Significance and Observance

What is Purnima?

As per the Hindu beliefs, Full Moon Day or Purnima is regarded as a highly auspicious and fortunate day. It is celebrated across the country in different names such as Poonam, Pournima and Purnima. The devotees usually keep a fast on this particular day and worship Moon God and Lord Vishnu.

What is Phalguna Purnima?

As per the Hindu calendar, when the full moon day or the Purnima is observed in the specific month of Phalguna during the Shukla Paksha, then that particular Purnima is called Phalguna Purnima. The day falls in the month of February or March as per the Gregorian calendar. There are various other festivals which are also celebrated in the month of Phalguna such as Holi, Maha Shivratri, and Vasant Panchami.

What Is The Significance Of Phalgun Purnima?

As per the Hindu calendar, Phalgun Purnima is regarded as the last Purnima on which the festival of Holi is celebrated. On this particular day, at various places, people also observe Lakshmi Jayanti, which is the birth anniversary of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of abundance and wealth. As per the Hindu beliefs, the people who keep a fast of Phalguna Purnima and worship Lord Vishnu and God Moon on this day are bestowed with the divine blessings of the deity and also get relieved from their present and past sins.

What Are The Rituals Of Phalguna Purnima?

  • On the day of Phalguna Purnima, the devotees are required to wake up early morning and take a holy bath in the sacred rivers as it is regarded as highly auspicious and fortunate to do so.
  • After taking a holy bath, the devotees must perform the Vishnu puja either in the temple or at workshop or home.
  • The devotees must recite the Satyanarayan Katha after performing the ritual of Vishnu puja.
  • The devotees then visit any nearby temple of Lord Vishnu and worship and offer prayers to the deity.
  • Reciting of the Gayatri mantra and “Om Namo Narayana” mantra for 1008 times in a row is termed as highly auspicious.
  • People should make as many donations as possible on the eve of Phalgun Purnima. Food, clothes, and money should be donated to the needy.
