Magha Amavasya (also known as Maghi Amavasya) fall in the Hindu month of Magha, therefore the name Magha Amavasya. It is the day of observing Maun Vrat, therefore, it is also known as Mauni Amavasya. Mauni Vrat means the person observing the Vrat cannot utter even a single word. It is the most difficult form of fasting. Only some people become successful in keeping this fast. It is the day for connecting to your own self. It helps in acquiring peace, judging one's patience level and self-control. This day helps in improving spiritual awareness and for spiritual growth, one’s speech must be pure. To acquire the purity of speech, practicing silence is very helpful. It helps in conserving energy and eliminating negative energies. It also helps in controlling words before speaking as well as anger. Taking a holy dip in the sacred rivers is also recommended on this day. It is believed that taking a holy dip washes away all the sins and negative thoughts from the mind. This day experiences the presence of all Devas in the holy rivers. During bath, strict silence should be observed. Lord Brahma is worshipped on this day along with chanting Gayatri Mantra. Another major ritual to be carried out on this day is performing Pitru Puja (ancestral worship). Offering food to animals, diseased people is considered highly beneficial. Offering Til oil to Shani dev is also very auspicious on this day.
