About Kalki Jayanti Or Kalki Avatar

The festival of Kalki Jayanti is celebrated to mark the arrival of the Lord Kalki. Lord Kalki is the tenth incarnation (avatar) of the deity, Lord Vishnu. Among all the 10 incarnations of the deity, 9 have already been incarnated and only the tenth i.e. the final incarnation, Lord Kalki Avatar remains to be manifested.

For the revival of the Satya Yuga and elimination of the evil deeds (adharma), Lord Mahavishnu is expected to come in the form of Lord Kalki in the Kali Yuga. Therefore, the festival is celebrated across the country as Kalki Jayanti in order to anticipate and enjoy the arrival of the deity in the world.

From the Sanskrit word, “Kalka”, the name, ‘Kalki’ is derived. The name “Kalki” represents the one who eliminates all kind of filth and dirt from this universe. It is believed that Lord Vishnu will appear in the form of Lord Kalki to remove the dark forces and the evil out of this world, thereby establishing righteousness (dharma) and peace back into this universe.

When is Kalki Jayanti?

As per the Hindu Panchang, Kalki Jayanti is celebrated in the month of Shravan on the very sixth day of Shukla Paksha fortnight.

Significance of Kalki Jayanti

• In the Srimad Bhagavatam, Kalki is recognized as the tenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu who will appear for ending the current phase of Kali Yuga and bringing back the Satya Yuga.
• The devotees worship and pray to Lord Vishnu for his blessings and they also seek forgiveness for all their bad deeds or sins.
• Devotees also pray for a peaceful life and seek blessings as they are not sure that when the end will come.
• People observe a fast on this day to ensure a painless and peaceful end of their lives.
• Kalki is regarded as one of the most ferocious incarnations of Lord Vishnu who symbolizes the end of human race.
• The devotees perform puja and observe a fast to seek salvation as they feel that the end is near and so seeking mercy for the sins is advisable before the end.
• Kalki symbolizes the eight supreme traits of the deity and his key purpose is the liberation of a faithless world. The Kaliyuga is regarded as a dark age where religion and faith are ignored by the people and they get carried away in materialistic ambition and greed.
• It is believed that after the killing of the various corrupt kings, Lord Kalki would persuade devotion in the hearts of the human beings. The people will start following the path of religiousness and the era of purity and faith will come back again.

Rituals of Kalki Jayanti

There are various rituals of Kalki Jayanti such as :

• On the festival of Kalki Jayanti, people observe a fast for the entire day.
• People chant the various mantras for getting the blessings of Lord Vishnu such as the Narayana Mantra, Vishnu Sahasranama and other mantras for 108 times.
• The devotees chant Beej mantra while initiating the fast which is then followed by the Puja
• The idols of the deities are washed with water as well as Panchamrit. The various names of Lord Vishnu are chanted.
• On the day of Kalki Jayanti, it is important to donate food to the Brahmins.

Kalki Jayanti is a significant Hindu festival which commemorates the end of Kali Yuga and the re-establishment of Satya Yuga. This is why, this festival holds so much significance in Hindu culture and religion.
