Origin

As per the Hindu scriptures, it is believed that the repulsive, fierce and violent appearance of Goddess Durga emerged when the deity peeled off her divine golden skin in order to attack the demons. Goddess Kalaratri is the most terrible and darkest form of the deity. She is regarded as the vanquisher of all the fears, negative forces, ghosts, and evil. However, Goddess Kalaratri is very benevolent in protecting the devotees and always blesses them by fulfilling all their wishes and desires. Thus, the goddess is also known as Shubhankari.

Beliefs

As per the Hindu scriptures, it is believed that worshipping Goddess Kalaratri on the seventh day gives an abundant fruitful result. With her grace, devotees get power, position and earn an eminent status. She protects her devotees against the evil influence of demons and wrong people. The devotees who worship her get complete protection and long life. It is believed that Goddess Kalaratri is the owner and granter for siddhis. She is worshipped for siddhis, knowledge, power and wealth.

This day of Navratri has a great significance for Tantra Sadhna. The day is eagerly awaited by Sadhus and Tantriks. All the evil powers such as demons etc. can be warded off if the name of Maa is chanted. Maa Kalaratri removes the planetary obstacles. Her blessing removes all sorts of fears forever. It is believed that sweets made from Jaggery are distributed on this day to get rid of poverty.

Legend of Goddess Kalaratri

As per the Hindu beliefs, Maa Kalaratri is believed to be the most ferocious and fiercest form of Goddess Parvati. According to the legend and scriptures, Nishumbha and Shumbha were two demons who conquered the holy abode of the deities (Devlok). Lord Indra was defeated by the demons. To get the Devlok back, all the deities sought help from Goddess Parvati. To support the deities, Goddess Parvati sent Goddess Chandi for their help.

Seeing Goddess Chandi, the demons Nishumbha and Shumbha sent Munda and Chanda to fight with the Goddess. Therefore, the avatar of Goddess Kalaratri was created in order to defeat and kill them. After killing the demons Chanda and Munda, the Goddess was named Chamunda. After this, the demon Raktabeej arrived who possessed the ability to recreate himself with the help of his blood. Every single time when Maa Kalratri killed him, the blood of Raktabeej spilled on the floor and a new body used to create for the demon. Hence, Goddess Kalaratri decided to drink the entire blood of Raktabeej so that not even a single drop falls on the ground and thus Raktabeej was killed and the ‘Devtas’ got their Devlok back.
