What is Kajari Teej Festival?

Kajari Teej, also known as Kajali Teej, is widely celebrated all over India. This Hindu festival is celebrated in the lunar month of Bhadrapada on the 3rd day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha). As per the Gregorian calendar, Kajari Teej usually falls in the month of August of July. It is basically a festival which is celebrated majorly by Hindu women. What is the Significance Of Kajari Teej?

The Kajari festival is also known as Satudi Teej and Bundi Teej in some specific regions. While Hariyali Teej is known as Choti Teej, this is known as Badi Teej. However, this festival also holds similar significance for married women. As per the Hindu beliefs, it is believed that fasting on Kajari Teej blesses the women with immense bliss and happiness in their married life.

What are The Rituals for Kajari Teej?

The eve of Kajari Teej is celebrated with much enthusiasm and joy. Although at various regions people celebrate the festival by adding their own touch but the basic rituals are common, which include :

  • For the longevity and good fortune of the husbands, the married women observe a Kajari Teej fast. Unmarried girls also observe this fast to get blessed with a good husband. Women break the fast by worshipping the Moon and some worship the Neem tree to conclude the fast.
  • On this day, Sattu is prepared with rice, gram, wheat and barley.
  • On Kajari Teej, it is significant to worship cows. It is essential to feed the holy cows first with small chapatis which are made up of wheat flour with some ghee and jaggery. After this ritual, the devotees can consume food.
  • The Hindu women enjoy the festival by singing and dancing on folk songs and by decorating the house with beautiful swings
  • One more essential aspect of this day are the songs. Accompanied by the blissful beats of drums, individuals of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh sing various Kajari Teej songs.

What is the Kajari Teej Puja Vidhi?

Goddess Neemdi or popularly called as Neemdi Maa is associated with the sacred festival of Kajari Teej. The devotees devotedly worship Goddess Neemdi on this day. There is also a ritual which is performed before initiating the puja which includes making up a pond-like structure with the help of some wall. For decorating the outer borders of the structure jaggery and pure ghee is used.

A twig of Neem is planted nearby. Devotees pour water and raw milk and light a lamp near the structure. Puja thali is decorated with a number of things such as whole rice, sacred thread, vermillion, sattu, fruits, cucumber and lemon. In a vessel, raw milk is stored and during the evening time, devotees worship Goddess Neemdi as per the rituals listed below:

  • Rice, vermillion (sindoor) and sprinkling water is offered to the Goddess
  • With the help of henna and vermillion, 13 dots each are made using the ring finger while 13 dots are made by kohl using the ring finger
  • Then, clothes, kohl and henna are offered after offering the sacred thread to the Goddess
  • The wall is then decorated with the sacred thread using the dots marked on it.
  • Next to this, fruits are offered to the Goddess. On the Puja Kalash, devotees tie the sacred thread around the kalash (sacred vessel) and put a Tilak with vermillion on it
  • In the light of the diya (earthen lamp) which is placed beside the pond, women need to look at the nosepin, neem twig, cucumber and lemon in the light of the lamp (diya). After that offering Arghya to Moon is performed.

What are The Rituals for Offering Arghya to Moon?

Once the devotees have worshipped Goddess Neemdi, an offering of Arghya is performed to the Moon according to

  • After putting vermillion and water and tying sacred thread, whole rice with some food oblations are offered to Moon.
  • Arghya is offered to the Moon by holding wheat grains and silver ring in the hand

What are The Rituals of Kajari Teej Vrat?

  • Women who observe a strict Kajari Teej Fast should get up early in the morning before sunrise and eat something. After that, they abstain themselves from consuming food and drinking water.
  • Then, married women get all dressed up in the evening and worship Neem tree and Moon before concluding the fast.
  • After a woman start observing this fast, she would have to continue the same for 16 long years.

Kajari Teej is a celebration that is much awaited by all the Hindu women. It is a vibrant festival for them and holds importance as it is associated with their marital happiness and their husband’s long life.
