What is Gudi Padwa?

Gudi Padwa 2020 marks the celebration of the Maharashtrian New Year . In the South Indian states, this day is celebrated as the harvest day, which marks the beginning of the spring season.

The day is celebrated all over India but with different names, cultural beliefs and celebrations. On this day various rituals take place which begin at sunrise and continue throughout the day.

When is Gudi Padwa celebrated?

According to the Hindu calendar, the first day of Chaitra month is celebrated as Gudi Padwa, when farmers harvest rabi crops and consider it to be the beginning of the Hindu New Year. This day is also very popular by the name of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada.

  • Vikram Samvatsara begins on the first day of the full moon fortnight, called Chaitra Shukla Pratipada or “Padwa” in Marathi. 
  • If Pratipada occurs on the sunrise of two days, the first day is considered as the day of Gudi Padwa celebration. 
  • If Pratipada doesn’t occur on the sunrise of any consecutive two days, then Gudi Padwa is celebrated on the day when the Pratipada is beginning and ending.

  • On the day of Gudi Padwa, devotees worship and offer prayers to Lord Brahma, the ultimate creator of the universe. According to the scriptures and legends, it is believed that he created the universe on the day of Gudi Padwa. 
  • In the state of Maharashtra, this day is celebrated with grandeur and enthusiasm. It is believed that this festival removes all evil and also attracts good luck and prosperity. 
  • In the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the occasion is celebrated as a Ugadi festival . It is also the auspicious day when Chaitra Navratri begins.
  • Gudi Padwa is considered as one of the most auspicious Muhurat out of 3 Sadhe Teen Muhurats- Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, Vaishakha Shukla Pratipada and Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the half Muhurat. 

What is the history of Gudi Padwa?

According to the scriptures and Hindu mythology, the day of Gudi Padwa is celebrated because it symbolizes the auspicious day when Lord Brahma created this universe. Apart from this, it is also a symbol of victory when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. The Gudi raised on the Gudi Padwa symbolizes the victory flag that is always held high. 

What is the legend of Gudi Padwa?

Gudi Padwa is an occasion that marks the victory of the Shakas over the Hunas. According to the story behind Gudi Padwa and the Shalivahana calendar , the Huns were defeated by King Shalivahana on this day. Legend states that this is the day when Brahma created the universe and thus on the day of Gudi Padwa, the Satya Yuga began.

What are the rituals of Gudi Padwa?

  • Gudi Padwa ritual begins before sunrise where devotees wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath by applying oil on their bodies.
  •  The women clean their homes and later decorate the houses and entrances with mango leaves and beautiful flowers. In villages, people used to plaster their houses with cow-dung. 
  • On Gudi Padwa, devotees worship and pray to Lord Brahma and then unfurl Gudi. Subsequently, it is believed that with Gudi hoisting, devotees can invoke Lord Vishnu. 
  • Making of Gudi: Gudi is made by tieing up neem leaves, yellow or red cloth, mango leaves and garlands of red flowers on a bamboo stick. On the top, an inverted silver or copper pot is placed. People also make beautiful Gudi Padwa Rangoli around Gudi to seek divine blessings.
  • Later, the devotees worship the deity and pray for the divine blessings of Lord Vishnu to attain prosperity and security. 

How to raise Gudi?

Hoisting Gudi is an important ritual of Gudi Padwa Celebration and thus it is necessary that you raise Gudi in the right way. Here are the steps to raise Gudi. 

  1. Clean the area where you want to raise Gudi. 
  2. Draw Swastik rangoli on the ground. 
  3. Offer Turmeric and vermilion ( Haldi and Kumkum) at the centre of Swastik.
  4. Gudi represents “Sushumna nadi” of the body. Thus, it should be always raised at the right side of the entrance of the house. Always keep the Gudi tilted, not straight. Some people also raise their Gudi at the windows of the house.
  5. Gudi is hoisted amidst the chanting the Gudi Padwa Mantras.

How is Gudi Padwa celebrated?

  1. On Gudi Padwa day, people gather and greet “Happy New year” or “Happy Gudi Padwa 2020” to their loved ones.
  2. People in Maharashtra dress up in new clothes. Marathi men wear Kurta Pajama and saffron or red Turban on their head while Marathi women wear their traditional attire, Kastha or Nauvari, a nine- yard Marathi Saree tucked at the back. 
  3. Beautiful Gudi Padwa Rangoli and decorations of flowers are made on home and streets.
  4. Traditionally, families begin Gudi Padwa celebration by eating Prasad made of Neem leaves, jaggery, cumin seeds, salt and tamarind. It is believed that eating this Prasad purifies blood and strengthens your immune system. 
  5. People bring special Gudi Padwa 2020 New Year Panchang or horoscope. 
  6. At home, special and traditional dishes are prepared such as Puran Poli, Puri and Shrikhand, sweet rice popularly called Saqqara Bhat. 
  7. People enjoy the celebration with their friends and family and be part of the procession on the road. They perform a special Gudi Padwa Lezim dance on Gudi Padwa 2020 celebrations.
