Govatsa Dwadashi 2025 is a Hindu festival that is observed a day prior to Dhanteras. On this day, the worship of cows and calves is performed. It is a unique celebration as this day devotees pay their thanks and gratitude to the Holy Cow for their contribution in the sustenance of human life. Also known as Nandini Vrat, this day is observed on Hindu tithi of Dwadashi (Krishna Paksha) in the Hindu month of Ashwin. This day is also celebrated as Vasu Baras in Maharashtra and marks the first day of the festival of lights, Diwali.
The festival of Govatsa Dwadashi 2025 pays its tribute to 'Nandini', the divine cow. A cow is a highly sacred animal in Hindu culture and is revered as the holy mother as it provides nourishment to every human being. On this day, women keep Nandini Vrat for the happiness and long life of their children. It is also believed that any childless couple who worships a cow on this day and observes a fast is soon blessed with a child. During this fast, the devotees abstain from eating any dairy or wheat products. The observation and celebration of this festivity are done with much enthusiasm in many parts of India and those who do it are blessed with happiness and prosperity.
