Significance of Bhadrapada Amavasya

In Hindu religion, it is believed that by praying on the eve of Bhadrapada Amavasya, one is rid of past sins, and malicious feelings are driven out of mind. It helps individuals start afresh on a spiritual and optimistic note. Many individuals observe Bhadrapada Amavasya fast to usher in harmony and peace in their abode. There are devotees who visit the sacred Ganga river to pray for the peace of their ancestors’ souls and those of their loved ones. They perform Puja at their residence or a nearby temple for their forefathers.

In Rajasthan, Bhadrapada Amavasya is observed in the memory of Rani Sati. In Jhunjhunu district of the desert state, a huge fair is organized in the honour of a local legend Rani Sati who is idolized by a section of the society because she sacrificed herself on her husband’s funeral pyre. A temple has been erected in her name as a mark of respect where her followers pray on Bhadrapada Amavasya.

Bhadrapada Amavasya and Kaal Sarp Dosh

It is said that natives who suffer from Kaal Sarpa dosha can mitigate the effects of misfortunes that befall them due to this dosha in their Kundali (horoscope) by conducting Puja on Bhadrapada Amavasya. Individuals with Kaal Sarpa dosha in their natal charts remain mentally disturbed because of their sins and misdeeds performed in past life. Worshipping and praying on Bhadrapada Amavasya helps them wash away their past sins and get blessed with a peaceful, happy and successful life.
