What is Annakut Puja?

The festival of Annakut Puja, popularly known as Govardhan Puja, is a religiously significant aspect of 5-day Diwali festival. Annakut, as the name suggests, means mountain of food. It is a festival dedicated to Lord Krishna. On this day, Hindu devotees prepare different variety of dishes and offer it to Lord Krishna and other deities as a way to express their thanks and gratitude to the almighty for bestowing his blessings.

When is Annakut Puja?

In the Hindu month of Kartik, right after the main day of Diwali, Annakut Puja (Govardhan Puja) and Bali Pratipada are observed.

Why is Annakut Puja Celebrated?

Annakut Puja is observed to honor the victory of Lord Krishna over Lord Indra where Lord Krishna saved the people of Gokul from the wrath of Lord Indra with the help of Govardhan Parvat.

What is Annakut Puja Vidhi?

On this day, people cook 56 types of varied food preparations and offer it as 'Bhog' to Lord Krishna

Prior to offering the 'Annakut Bhog', the idol of Lord Krishna is bathed with milk and then bedecked with bright clothes and beautiful jewels

The 'Chappan Bhog' is then proffered to Lord Krishna followed by Govardhan Aarti post which this 'Annakut Prasad' is shared with the family and friends.
