Akshaya Navami - Rituals And Significance

Akshaya Navami is regarded as one of the most significant rituals in Hindu culture. This festival is celebrated on the ninth day (Navami) in the Kartik month during the Shukla Paksha as per the Hindu calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, it is celebrated either in the month of October or November. The ritual is celebrated two days before the celebration of Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

  • After that, the devotees clean the place of worship and make thirty squares by using turmeric powder. All these squares made are called as ‘Kotha’ and are filled up with food items, grains, and pulses.
  • The devotees then perform the puja by reciting several Vedic mantras. The farmers celebrate the day for having a continuous stock of food grains and a rich harvest.
  • As a part of the ritual, women observe an Akshaya Navami fast on this day and abstain oneself from consumption of food and water. The day is spent by reciting several kirtans and bhajans.
  • In various regions, the day is also meant for worshipping ‘Amla’ tree (an Indian Gooseberry tree). For attaining good health, people should eat Amla on this particular day.
