The observance of Hanuman Puja on Kali Chaudas has a deep significance. It is believed that on the night of Kali Chaudas, the evil and bad spirits become quite powerful. The worship of Lord Hanuman is done to seek his blessings. He bestows his devotees with the strength to fight such evil spirits. Lord Hanuman protects those who perform Hanuman Puja from the effect of all the bad spirits.
As per another mythological legend, the celebration of Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Goddess Sita and Lord Hanuman to Ayodhya after an exile of 14 years. On this day, Lord Rama had proclaimed that Lord Hanuman will always be worshipped before him owing to his deep devotion.

In several regions, the day of Hanuman Puja is also observed as Hanuman Jayanti, especially at Hanumangarhi in Ayodhya. However, as per Hindu Panchang, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on Chaitra Purnima.
