What is Purnima?

The tithi of Purnima holds a special place in the Hindu calendar as well as Indian astrology. The day of the full moon, it is considered auspicious in Hindu religion. Many devotees observe a fast on the day of Purnima, which occurs each month. Observing Purnima Vrat is said to bestow the devotee with many benefits.

Purnima fast is believed to bless devotees with health, success, wealth and happiness. Since moon is believed to have a strong influence on the mind (with a full moon also causing high tides), fasting on this day is said to improve mental and physical strength. It can help an individual control their mind and various emotions, including temper. Hinduism believes that a Purnima fast creates a positive aura and purifies thought.

Besides religious reasons, astrologers have a scientific backing to recommend not eating regular food on Purnima. It is said that the acid content in the stomach is minimum on the new moon or a full moon day, making digestion of regular food difficult. Thus, it is advised to have light food in order to detox and cleanse the system.

Purnima Vrat Udyapan Vidhi

To begin Purnima Vrat, it is advisable to wake up before sunrise and take a dip in a sacred river, if possible. After this, one should offer prayers to Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva. There is no set Puja for this fast, but it is recommended that the auspicious Satyanarayan Puja should be performed. This Puja is performed on important occasions like the start of a new venture, wedding, housewarming etc to thank Lord Vishnu and seek his blessings.

Satyanarayan Puja begins with a prayer to Lord Ganesha and chanting of the Vishnu Sahasranamam Shloka. One can also chant more Shlokas and then offer Milk porridge sprinkled with some saffron, dry fruits, and exotic fruits along with betel leaves, etc to the deity. One should recite the Satyanarayan Vrat Katha before concluding the Puja.
