Lord Shani Story

Lord Sun is the ruler of this entire solar System. He was wed to Swarna, daughter of Lord Vishwakarma. Unable to bear his heat, Swarna once asked her father for a way. Lord Vishwakarma told her that if he had to become tolerant to Lord Surya’s heat then she would have to meditate long in order to bear the capability to tolerate Lord Surya’s heat.

Swarna wanted to go for the meditation but did not even want to intimate Lord Sun. So out of Lord Vishwakarma’s many devices that he often used to create and recreate the World, she chose the one that could create a shadow image of the human being.

A shadow image of Swarna soon appeared in front of her and Swarna named her Chaya. She assigned the shadow image with two prime tasks-

Never let Lord Sun know that she was not Swarna but Chaya.

Swarna wanted Chaya to take care of her son, Yama and daughter Yami at all cost. Yami is known more popularly as Lord Shani’s sister than Lord Yama’s sister.

When Lord Shani Dev was in his mother’s womb, Chaya would long meditate under the Sun to impress Lord Shiva. It seems Mahadev nurtured and protected Lord Shani while he was in his mother’s womb. This turned Lord Shani Dev in to a bluish black baby when he was born and the proud Sun was definitely enraged by the black son who was born out of him.

Now, when Swarna left, Chaya gave birth to Lord Shani Dev and the day Lord Shani was born his father was eclipsed for the first time. Lord Shani could thus never gain complete favors of his father ever and was always neglected as a child.

As a child Lord Shani Dev would oppose the actions of the Gods and even criticize his father’s judgments. This infuriated Sun and other Gods. He would often advocate for the suppressed and oppressed groups of the world including the demons and Gandharva. This would infuriate those Gods who would be against equality and equanimity. However, slowly people began to know him as a Saviour, the ones he protected. Those who were punished began to fear him.
