Ashwin Month

Ashwin month is considered to be the 7th Lunar month in the Hindu calendar. As per the Gregorian calendar, this month falls between September-October. 

The lunar month is observed by two methods in the Hindu calendar. In the 1st method, the Lunar month marks its presence from Purnima to Purnima which is known as the Purnimanta calendar whereas in another method Lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya which is known as the Amanta calendar.

Some important festivals of Ashwin Month are Indira Ekadashi, Maha Navami, Dussehra, Sharad Purnima.

List of Ashwin Month Festivals

  • Beginning of Pitrupaksha- This day is marked as the beginning of the duration when the Hindus pay homage and adulation to their ancestors (known as Pitrs). The homage is usually paid by offering food. 
  • Indira Ekadashi- This is among the 24 vrats of Ekadashi which is kept to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu for a happy and prosperous life. 
  • Sarva Pitru Amavasya- This day is also recognized as Mahalaya Amavasya or Sarvapitri Amavasya and it is the last and the most important day of Pitru Paksha. 
  • Jivitputrika Vrat- This vrat is observed by the mothers throughout the day for the well-being of their children. Keeping Nirjala fast is considered the most significant on this day. 
  • Shardiya Navratri- This is the most important and significant Navratri out of all the Navratris. And this is one of the reasons why Shardiya Navratri is known as Maha Navratri. 
  • Saraswati Avahan- Saraswati Avahan is the 1st day of Saraswati puja at the time of Navratri Puja.
  • Saraswati Puja- The Saraswati Pradhan Puja is the 2nd day of Saraswati Puja during Navratri Puja.
  • Durga Ashtami- Durga Ashtami is one of the most auspicious and significant days of the Durga Puja. This day is also known as the Maha Ashtami.
  • Maha Navami- This is the 9th and the last day of the Durga Puja festival. The main puja of Navratri is commenced after Sandhi Puja ends.
  • Dussehra- Dussehra or Vijayadashmi is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. As on this day Lord Rama defeated the Demon Ravana.
  • Papankusha Ekadashi- This is one of the 24 Ekadashi in which people observe fast to appease Lord Vishnu.
  • Sharad Purnima- This day is believed to be the only day when the moon appears with all the sixteen Kalas, once a year. 
  • Upang Lalita Vrat- People observe fasting all day long on this occasion and worship Goddess Lalita. This vrat is also recognized as the Upang Lalita Vrat.
  • Kojagara Puja- Lakshmi Puja done in the month of Ashwin is known as the Kojagara Puja.
